When boring beneath railways, settlement and heaving must be avoided. Constant monitoring is performed to ensure no heaving or settlement occurs.
Casing and Tunneling Requirements
Except in rare cases, a casing is required to carry the product pipe. The casing must be designed to carry the axle load of a train. Other casing requirements include a minimum wall thickness and that the inside diameter of the casing pipe is large enough that the product pipe, including all joints, couplings, supports, insulators, or centering devices can be removed without disturbing the casing.
The minimum depth for the casing is 6 feet. Casing must also be located further than 2 pipe diameters away from existing utilities and structures to minimize the risk of damaging utilities during installation.
